What is VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

A tool that encrypts your internet connection and hides your browsing from the local network and your internet provider.

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for all your traffic. It adds privacy on untrusted networks and hides which sites you visit from the network operator — but it does not make you anonymous, and it moves your trust to the VPN company itself. A shady 'free' VPN can be worse than none, because it can see and sell your traffic. Thanks to HTTPS, a VPN is a useful extra layer rather than a necessity for most people.
